All Natural, Zero Waste, DIY, Vegan, Facial Toner!

I’ve never really been big into all of the hype of beauty products in general. I see people using 10+ different creams, toners, soaps, moisturizers, etc. on their face 2x a day, and I’m not quite sure I understand. Is this necessary? For me I’m just a water kind of girl, like seriously, I pretty much only put water on my face. My skin is so super sensitive to chemicals that it’s just not in the cards for me.

However, since I have been using essential oils, I have discovered some really great things about them. For example, lemon and frankincense can lighten your skin and even out your skin tone, rosemary can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and more! While I have a great complexion, I have very uneven skin tone due to melasma from pregnancy. But I have found a way to aid in this by using essential oils! I am so excited about this because my skin is not sensitive to them at all, they are vegan, made 100% from plants, pure therapeutic grade oils, and I only need a few drops!

I have been doing two things to help my face in the past few weeks. I created a skin lightening/evening cream made with coconut oil, melaleuca, lemon, lavender, and frankincense essential oils. I have also created this AMAZING skin toner!

Skin toners are so great, and have wonderful benefits! But don’t forget, they are not all alike. Common skin toners often include sodium laurel sulfates, petroleum, synthetic fragrance, acetone, lanolin, phthalates, and more! This is not good, and I do not want that on my skin! Did you know your skin is the largest organ in your body, and whatever you put on it can enter your bloodstream within 4 minutes. Now just take a moment to think of all the things you put on your skin…

So I have come up with a super simple, all natural, zero waste, homemade DIY toner that will not only improve you skin, but it can also:

  • Reduce the size of your pores. (All)
  • Even your skin tone. (Frankincense)
  • Balances the pH of your skin. (Apple Cider Vinegar)
  • Prevent ingrown hairs. (Apple Cider Vinegar, Melaleuca)
  • Gently cleans. (All)
  • Adds a thin layer of protection. (Frankincense)
  • Reduces the chance of breakouts. (Melaleuca, Rosemary)
  • Reduce the appearance of wrinkles. (Rosemary)
  • Brighten your skin. (Frankincense.
  • And more…

So here it is

Homemade Zero Waste Cashew Milk

cashew-2Why on earth would someone make homemade nut milks when they could just buy it so easily at the store? No straining, no mess, perfectly sweetened…

In terms of zero waste, plant based milk is almost always packaged in Tetra Pak. Although the cartons just seem like cardboard, they aren’t. Something has to keep the milk from seeping though, and we all know cardboard is not waterproof. So what is Tetra Pak anyway?

Let’s start from the inside out…

6 LAYERS – Polyurethane, polyurethane, aluminum, polyurethane, paperboard, and finally another layer of polyurethane.

So now it’s a bit easier to understand why these packages are not recyclable at all. Do your recycling center a favor and quit putting them in there already!

Talk about bulk! This is 25 lbs. for only $1.5o a lb!

Reasons why you should drink homemade nut milks…

Homemade nut milks are so EASY! If you’ve been afraid to try, you have no reason to! This is my simple recipe that I use for most nut milks. Cashew milk is one of my favorites though because you don’t have to strain it, so you aren’t left with a bunch of pulp. Sometimes pulp is great, and there are many things you can use it for, but it’s just easier to skip the straining part. If you don’t have a pretty good blender you may still have to strain, but it might be good enough, just give it a try.

Homemade Zero Waste Cashew Milk

3/4-1 Cup Raw Cashews (soaked in enough water to cover for at least 4 hours)

4 Cups Water

2 Tbsp Pure Maple Syrup (optional, but I like mine sweet!)

1/2-1 tsp. Vanilla (You decide! I like 1/2 tsp.)

Pinch of Ground Cinnamon (optional)

Pinch of Sea Salt

Directions – Blend, blend, blend, drink!

Stores in the fridge for about 4 days. If you can’t drink that much, then half the recipe.

If you are doing another kind of nut, then you will want to soak the nuts, blend with water, strain, then add the rest.
